What to do in Cassis
Start with Calanques, the single must-see of Cassis and the reason most travellers come this way. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours; arrive at opening or late afternoon to avoid the heat and the tour buses.
Then wander the old village on foot. Provence is a region you read at walking pace: the pale limestone, the plane-tree shade, the fountain in every square. Stop for a glass of rosé before dinner, anywhere with a terrace works.
For the second half-day, pair Cassis with a nearby drive: the Alpilles ridge, an olive mill, or a Roman site. Most are 15-30 minutes by car. Public transport is sparse, renting a car for two days transforms the trip.
Where to stay in Cassis

When to come
May, June and September are the honest answer: warm light, manageable heat, lavender in late June and early July (Sénanque Abbey blooms around 20 June, 15 July). October has the harvest light and empty terraces. Avoid the first three weeks of August unless you love a crowd; the mistral wind can also blow for several days in winter.
